Stretching along the east side of the Hudson River from the Hudson Highlands north toward Columbia County, Dutchess County has played an important role in New York history for centuries. Poughkeepsie grew into a major Hudson River city, Beacon developed from the old communities of Matteawan and Fishkill Landing, and towns such as Hyde Park, Rhinebeck, Millerton, Amenia, Wappinger, and Pawling produced people whose careers reached far beyond the Hudson Valley.

1. Franklin D. Roosevelt – Hyde Park
- Dutchess County Roots: Franklin D. Roosevelt was born at Springwood, his family’s estate in Hyde Park, on January 30, 1882. Hyde Park remained his home throughout his life, and he is buried on the estate alongside Eleanor Roosevelt.
- Claim to Fame: Roosevelt served as the 32nd President of the United States from 1933 until his death in 1945. He was elected to four terms, led the federal government through the Great Depression and most of World War II, and established his presidential library at Hyde Park.
2. Bill Duke – Poughkeepsie
- Dutchess County Roots: Bill Duke was born in Poughkeepsie in 1943 and grew up in the area. He attended Franklin D. Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park and Dutchess Community College before continuing his education in theater and film.
- Claim to Fame: Duke built a long career as both an actor and director. His acting credits include Car Wash, Commando, Predator, and Menace II Society, while his directing work includes A Rage in Harlem, Deep Cover, and Hoodlum.
3. Matthew Vassar – Poughkeepsie
- Dutchess County Roots: Matthew Vassar was born in England in 1792 and came to the United States with his family when he was four. The Vassar family settled in Dutchess County, and Poughkeepsie became the center of his business and civic life.
- Claim to Fame: Vassar became a successful brewer and philanthropist and founded Vassar College in Poughkeepsie in 1861. The college opened in 1865 and became one of the most important institutions in the history of higher education for women in the United States.
4. Lee Miller – Poughkeepsie
- Dutchess County Roots: Elizabeth “Lee” Miller was born in Poughkeepsie in 1907 and grew up there. Her father, an enthusiastic amateur photographer, introduced her to photography while she was young.
- Claim to Fame: Miller became a model, Surrealist photographer, and World War II correspondent for Vogue. Her photographs documented wartime Europe, including the liberation of Paris and the concentration camps at Buchenwald and Dachau.
5. Smith Thompson – Amenia
- Dutchess County Roots: Smith Thompson was born in Amenia in 1768. After studying at the College of New Jersey, now Princeton University, he returned to Dutchess County and practiced law in Poughkeepsie.
- Claim to Fame: Thompson served as U.S. Secretary of the Navy before joining the Supreme Court of the United States in 1823. He remained an associate justice until his death in Poughkeepsie in 1843.
6. Ed Wood – Poughkeepsie
- Dutchess County Roots: Edward D. Wood Jr. was born in Poughkeepsie in 1924 and spent his childhood there. His fascination with movies began early, and he worked at a local movie theater before entering the Marine Corps during World War II.
- Claim to Fame: Wood became one of Hollywood’s most famous cult filmmakers. His movies included Glen or Glenda, Bride of the Monster, and Plan 9 from Outer Space. His life later inspired Tim Burton’s 1994 film Ed Wood.
7. Keith Lockhart – Poughkeepsie and Wappingers Falls
- Dutchess County Roots: Keith Lockhart was born in Poughkeepsie in 1959 and grew up in Wappingers Falls. He began studying piano as a child before pursuing music professionally.
- Claim to Fame: Lockhart became conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra in 1995. His long tenure has included thousands of performances, national and international tours, television broadcasts, and the annual Boston Pops Fourth of July concert.
8. Joe Panik – Hopewell Junction
- Dutchess County Roots: Joe Panik grew up in the Hopewell Junction area and graduated from John Jay High School in Dutchess County. He later played college baseball at St. John’s University.
- Claim to Fame: Panik became a Major League Baseball second baseman and helped the San Francisco Giants win the 2014 World Series. He was an All-Star in 2015 and won a Gold Glove in 2016.
9. Tyler Adams – Wappingers Falls
- Dutchess County Roots: Tyler Adams grew up in Wappingers Falls and entered the New York Red Bulls development system while still a child. His Dutchess County upbringing remained part of his path into professional soccer.
- Claim to Fame: Adams became a midfielder for the United States men’s national soccer team and captained the United States at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He has also played professionally in Major League Soccer, Germany’s Bundesliga, and England’s Premier League.
10. Eddie Collins – Millerton
- Dutchess County Roots: Eddie Collins was born in Millerton in 1887 before attending Columbia University and beginning his professional baseball career.
- Claim to Fame: Collins became one of the greatest second basemen of baseball’s early era. He collected 3,315 hits, finished with a .333 career batting average, won multiple World Series championships, and was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939.
11. Dan Brouthers – Sylvan Lake
- Dutchess County Roots: Dan Brouthers was born at Sylvan Lake in Dutchess County in 1858 and became a standout amateur ballplayer in the region before entering professional baseball.
- Claim to Fame: Brouthers was one of the dominant hitters of 19th-century baseball. He won five batting titles, finished his career with a .342 batting average, and was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1945.
12. John Jacob Astor IV – Rhinebeck
- Dutchess County Roots: John Jacob Astor IV was born in 1864 at the Astor family’s Ferncliff estate in Rhinebeck.
- Claim to Fame: Astor became a prominent businessman, real-estate developer, inventor, and member of one of America’s wealthiest families. He helped develop the Waldorf-Astoria and built the St. Regis Hotel in New York City. He died in the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912.
13. Emma Roberts – Rhinebeck
- Dutchess County Roots: Emma Roberts was born in Rhinebeck in 1991 before spending much of her childhood elsewhere.
- Claim to Fame: Roberts began acting as a child and became known for the Nickelodeon series Unfabulous. Her later work has included Scream 4, We’re the Millers, Scream Queens, and multiple seasons of American Horror Story.
14. Joseph Mazzello – Rhinebeck and Hyde Park
- Dutchess County Roots: Joseph Mazzello was born in Rhinebeck in 1983 and raised in Hyde Park. He attended Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie before studying film at the University of Southern California.
- Claim to Fame: Mazzello became widely known as Tim Murphy in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park. His later roles included Eugene Sledge in HBO’s The Pacific, Dustin Moskovitz in The Social Network, and John Deacon in Bohemian Rhapsody.
15. Rufus Wainwright – Rhinebeck and Millbrook
- Dutchess County Roots: Rufus Wainwright was born in Rhinebeck in 1973. Although he spent much of his childhood in Montreal, he returned to Dutchess County as a teenager to attend the Millbrook School, graduating in 1991.
- Claim to Fame: Wainwright became an internationally known singer, songwriter, composer, and pianist. His albums include Poses and Want One, and his work has extended into opera, orchestral music, film soundtracks, and interpretations of the music of Judy Garland.
16. Robert Montgomery – Beacon
- Dutchess County Roots: Robert Montgomery was born in Beacon, then known as Fishkill Landing, in 1904. He later attended the Pawling School in Dutchess County, where he took part in school theater.
- Claim to Fame: Montgomery became a major Hollywood actor, director, producer, and television personality. He starred in films including Night Must Fall and Here Comes Mr. Jordan, directed the innovative film noir Lady in the Lake, and served multiple terms as president of the Screen Actors Guild.
17. James Forrestal – Beacon
- Dutchess County Roots: James Vincent Forrestal was born in 1892 in Matteawan, one of the communities that later became the city of Beacon. He graduated from local schools and worked for newspapers before leaving the area for college and a career in finance.
- Claim to Fame: Forrestal served as U.S. Secretary of the Navy during and after World War II and became the first U.S. Secretary of Defense in 1947 following the creation of the National Military Establishment.
18. Digger Phelps – Beacon
- Dutchess County Roots: Richard “Digger” Phelps was born in Beacon in 1941 and grew up there before attending Rider College.
- Claim to Fame: Phelps became one of college basketball’s best-known coaches during his 20 seasons at Notre Dame. He led the Fighting Irish to the 1978 Final Four and later spent many years as a college basketball analyst for ESPN.
19. George Judson – Beacon
- Dutchess County Roots: Engineer George Judson was born in Beacon in 1918 before studying civil engineering and beginning a long career with IBM.
- Claim to Fame: Judson and oncologist Emil J. Freireich developed the first continuous-flow blood cell separator, a medical technology that advanced leukemia treatment and blood-component therapy. Judson was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2025.
20. John Regan – Wappingers Falls
- Dutchess County Roots: John Regan was born in Dutchess County and became deeply identified with Wappingers Falls and the Poughkeepsie music scene, where he began playing in bands as a young musician and later made his home.
- Claim to Fame: Regan became a highly respected rock bassist whose career included decades of work with Peter Frampton and membership in Frehley’s Comet. He also recorded or performed with artists including David Bowie, Mick Jagger, the Rolling Stones, Billy Idol, and David Lee Roth.
21. Debi Thomas – Poughkeepsie
- Dutchess County Roots: Debi Thomas was born in Poughkeepsie in 1967 before growing up in California and beginning her figure-skating career.
- Claim to Fame: Thomas won the 1986 World Figure Skating Championship and a bronze medal at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. Her Olympic medal made her the first Black athlete to win a medal at the Winter Olympic Games.

- Dutchess County Roots: Television journalist and weather presenter Dave Price was born in Poughkeepsie in 1966.

25. Terry Michos – Poughkeepsie
- Dutchess County Roots: Terry Michos was born in Poughkeepsie in 1953 and later remained connected to the Hudson Valley through broadcasting, teaching, and public speaking.
- Claim to Fame: Michos is best remembered for playing Vermin, one of the central members of the gang in Walter Hill’s 1979 cult film The Warriors. He also appeared in television before moving into broadcasting and education.
