In the old days, pizzerias brought in new business by advertising in Newsday or the local penny savers. Of course, many pizzerias are still advertised in local newspapers like PennySaver or town newspapers, but you hardly ever see them advertised in Newsday anymore. Nowadays, in this social media world, smart places know how to promote their businesses on social media. If one social media site can draw in many people, it’s TikTok.
I’m a big fan of TikTok. I enjoy scrolling through the videos on there. I’m not scared that some foreign government is going to harness all my data and kidnap me or anything like that. I don’t really have anything that people can steal from me anyway. What are they going to take, my pens or my laptop? I don’t know. One of the accounts that I watch all the time is Pino’s Pizza. The owner, at least I think it’s the owner, is a real friendly guy who’s always showing how he makes his pizzas. Every time I watch one of those videos, I get hungry and get a craving for pizza. So today I decided, well, enough is enough. I’m heading out. It’s only about twenty minutes from my house, it’s a Saturday, there’s not much traffic, so let’s go.
Pino’s Pizzeria is located at 1747 Deer Park Road in Deer Park, NY. If you’re taking the Long Island Expressway, take exit 51 and head south. Deer Park Road is one of the most jam-packed roads on Long Island as far as local shopping goes. If you’re in the mood for any type of food, you can find it in Deer Park. Pino’s is located in a medium-sized strip mall. The parking is a little tight, but I did find a spot pretty easily when I first pulled in. Pino’s Pizzeria is the size of an old-school pizzeria. There are a few tables to sit at, but for the most part, like most traditional old-school pizzerias, it’s a place where you get your food and go.
Growing up in the Bronx and pretty much eating pizza a few days a week for most of my life, I feel two essential aspects must be met for me to ever go back to a pizzeria a second time. First, of course, is the food, which is obvious. The second, though, is friendliness. I’m not asking to be treated like a king or anything like that, but I don’t think it’s too much to ask for someone who works behind a counter to say hello or maybe give half a smile.
The girl who worked behind the counter at Pino’s was wonderful. She greeted me with a huge smile and quickly asked what I wanted. She was incredibly friendly. That’s the way to do it. I asked her which slices were the most popular choices among her customers. She was very happy to showcase a slice, which she said had become increasingly popular because of the interest. It was the exact slice that had pushed me to take a ride to the pizzeria in the first place. In one of their TikTok videos, I watched the owner create a pizza slice that consisted of vodka sauce, pepperoni, and ricotta cheese. She also mentioned that many of their Sicilian pies were popular, including the upside-down Sicilian, which looked really good.
As someone who takes a great interest in finding awesome pizza places, my go-to comparison is always a basic cheese slice. It’s what we all grew up eating in the ’60s and ’70s before all this fancy stuff began being thrown on pizza. So, I ordered one regular slice and one of those TikTok special slices that got me here in the first place.
I don’t always like telling people that I am going to do a review of their restaurant for various reasons. However, to get a picture of the inside, I must ask for permission because it is private property. When I asked if I could take a photo, once again, the young worker was incredibly friendly and said, “Of course.” To me, that showcases complete confidence in their product because they know you are someone who is going to write a review. After having to wait only a few minutes for the pizza to warm up, I left the place eagerly to go taste what smelled incredibly good in the pizza box.
Since I did not want the vodka slice to throw off my taste buds, I decided to taste the regular slice first. My initial reaction to the first bite was how fresh the cheese tasted. I like my traditional slices to be a good mix of sauce and cheese. Pino’s regular slice was a bit heavy on the cheese, but for many people, that is a good thing. I know plenty of people who like a lot of cheese or at least a thick cheese on their slice. It wasn’t overbearing, and there was still enough sauce to satisfy my love for a good slice. There was not much oil on it, which I like, and no overpowering seasoning that sometimes can overshadow the basics. This was a very good slice that I would have no problem eating on a regular basis, which is the biggest compliment that I could give to any pizzeria.
Next up was the popular vodka slice. This was the food item that got me there in the first place. I loved it instantly as I took the first bite. The vodka sauce was not overpowering. That is important because, in the end, this is a slice of pizza, not a pasta dish. I’m not sure if it was the vodka sauce itself that wasn’t that strong or the combination of the pepperoni and ricotta cheese that toned down the sauce a little. All I know is that it all worked perfectly together. Fueling this magnificent slice were obviously fresh ingredients. The ricotta cheese was out of this world. It brought tears to my eyes. The pepperoni was stunning, even though it had just a little kick to it. The dough was strong and supported all those heavy ingredients. It was easy to tell why this slice had become so popular. This was a big-time winner and one of the best slices I have ever had outside of the traditional cheese slice.
If you’re a Long Islander or live anywhere in the New York metropolitan area and are looking for a really original tasting slice of pizza, I would highly recommend that you give Pino’s a visit.
