If you have seen Madden NYC shoes, clothing, or accessories at a mass retailer and wondered whether the name is really connected to Steve Madden, the answer is yes. Madden NYC is an official company-owned brand of Steven Madden, Ltd. It is not a counterfeit label and it is not an unrelated company using the Madden name.
That does not mean Madden NYC and the main Steve Madden line are exactly the same thing. Steve Madden is the company’s flagship brand, while Madden NYC is positioned for value-oriented and mass-market distribution. The two labels can differ in assortment, materials, construction, price, and where they are sold.
The relationship becomes even more interesting once you look at the history. Madden NYC did not begin as a Walmart brand. Steven Madden, Ltd. launched Madden NYC footwear in 2017 as a new brand sold exclusively through Kohl’s. Years later, Madden NYC expanded into apparel and broader mass-market distribution. Today, the brand is prominently sold at Walmart, while the Steve Madden company itself remains headquartered in Long Island City, Queens.
Is Madden NYC the Same as Steve Madden?
Madden NYC is owned by the same company as Steve Madden, but it is a separate brand within the Steve Madden portfolio.
Steven Madden, Ltd. identifies both Steve Madden and Madden NYC among its important company-owned trademarks. That makes the relationship much clearer than the similar names alone might suggest: Madden NYC is an authentic Steve Madden company brand.
The distinction is mainly about market position and distribution. Steve Madden is the flagship label sold through the company’s own stores and website as well as wholesale partners. Madden NYC is designed to help the company reach value and mass-market shoppers.
Is Madden NYC Owned by Steve Madden?
Yes. Steven Madden, Ltd., the publicly traded company behind the Steve Madden brand, owns the Madden NYC trademark.
The company’s 2025 annual report, filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission in March 2026, lists Madden NYC among the trademarks the company considers most significant to its business. The same filing lists Steve Madden, Madden Girl, Kurt Geiger, Dolce Vita, Betsey Johnson, Carvela, Blondo, Almost Famous, and ATM among other important company brands.
For shoppers, the important point is simple: if a product is legitimately labeled Madden NYC, the brand name belongs to Steve Madden.
Is Madden NYC a Diffusion Line?
Madden NYC functions much like what the fashion industry often calls a diffusion or value line, but “mass-market brand” is the clearer description.
Steve Madden has long used multiple labels to reach different parts of the footwear and fashion market. Company filings have described other Madden labels as diffusion brands, while more recent corporate materials explain the broader strategy as using the Steve Madden brand portfolio to reach customers across different tiers of distribution, from premium channels through mass retail.
Madden NYC occupies the value-oriented side of that strategy. It carries the Madden name and follows trend-driven fashion, but it should not be treated as merely a cheaper version of every shoe sold under the Steve Madden label. It is its own product line with its own assortments and retail channels.
Was Madden NYC Created for Walmart?
No. This is one of the biggest misconceptions about the brand.
Steven Madden, Ltd. introduced Madden NYC footwear in spring 2017 as a new brand distributed exclusively at Kohl’s. The initial rollout reached approximately 450 Kohl’s stores. After a strong first year, selected women’s styles expanded to all Kohl’s locations, and the company began testing men’s Madden NYC footwear there as well.
The Walmart connection came later. Madden NYC eventually became part of Steve Madden’s broader mass-market strategy, and Walmart now carries a large assortment of Madden NYC footwear, apparel, handbags, jewelry, and other accessories.
Madden NYC Apparel Arrives in 2022
The Madden NYC story took another turn in 2022 when Steve Madden expanded the name into women’s apparel.
Almost Famous, a junior apparel company, became the exclusive licensee of Madden NYC apparel when that clothing line launched in 2022. Almost Famous specialized in value-priced fashion and already had relationships with mass merchants, department stores, off-price retailers, and national chains.
In October 2023, Steven Madden, Ltd. acquired substantially all of the assets and certain liabilities of Almost Famous. The transaction gave Steve Madden a larger internal platform for value-priced apparel. The company later explained that it intended to use the Almost Famous operation to expand Madden NYC apparel and introduce additional Madden labels into lower-priced retail channels.
How Is Madden NYC Different From the Main Steve Madden Brand?
The safest way to understand the difference is by looking at brand position rather than assuming that every product follows one fixed formula.
Steve Madden is the company’s core flagship label. It appears in Steve Madden stores, on the company’s own website, and through department stores, online retailers, and other wholesale partners.
Madden NYC is positioned more heavily toward value and mass-market retail. Its current Walmart assortment demonstrates that role clearly, with footwear, clothing, handbags, jewelry, and accessories offered at prices intended for a broad consumer market.
Materials vary by individual product in both brands. Some Madden NYC shoes use polyurethane and other manmade materials. Mainline Steve Madden products can include genuine leather, textiles, vegan leather, and synthetic components depending on the style. It is therefore inaccurate to say that all Steve Madden shoes are leather while all Madden NYC shoes are synthetic.
The same caution applies to durability. A label alone does not establish how long a particular pair of shoes will last. Construction, materials, how often the shoes are worn, and how they are cared for all matter.
The Steve Madden Story Begins in Queens
The connection between Steve Madden and New York is much deeper than a brand name.
Steve Madden has described Far Rockaway, Queens, as home, although he grew up just across the city line in Lawrence on Long Island. His company also began with manufacturing in Queens and remains headquartered in the borough today.
Steven Madden, Ltd. was incorporated as a New York corporation on July 9, 1990. The company says the business began with an investment of just $1,100 and a factory in Queens.
That small beginning eventually grew into one of the most recognizable American footwear companies, but the location never became irrelevant. In 2026, Steven Madden, Ltd. still maintains its principal executive offices at 52-16 Barnett Avenue in Long Island City, Queens.
The 1990 Steve Madden Trunk Story
One of the best-known stories about Steve Madden’s early years is that he sold his first shoes directly to New York-area retailers from the trunk of his car.
The basic story is true. Madden started the company with little capital, had an initial run of shoes produced, and personally drove samples around to stores looking for buyers. Early accounts identify one of his first designs as the Marilyn, a pointed clog that helped get the new company into stores.
The important part of the story is not the make or color of the car. It is that the future public company began as an extremely small New York footwear operation in which the founder was personally designing, selling, and delivering shoes to retailers.
The Mary Lou Helps Put Steve Madden on the Map
Another detail that often gets simplified in retellings of Steve Madden history is the name of his early Mary Jane-style hit.
The breakthrough shoe is generally identified as the Mary Lou, a patent-leather variation on the traditional Mary Jane with an exaggerated toe. It became an important early seller as Madden built a following among younger fashion customers during the early 1990s.
Platforms, chunky soles, clogs, and exaggerated proportions became closely associated with the Steve Madden look during that decade. The company was especially good at translating street trends and music-driven fashion into shoes that could reach a large young audience quickly.
Steve Madden Opens in SoHo and Goes Public
The company grew quickly enough that Steve Madden opened its first freestanding New York retail store in SoHo in 1993.
That same year, Steven Madden, Ltd. completed its initial public offering. Its shares trade on the NASDAQ Global Select Market under the ticker symbol SHOO.
The transition from a small Queens shoe operation to a public fashion company happened in only a few years, one of the reasons the Steve Madden story became such an unusual chapter in New York retail history.
The Stratton Oakmont Chapter
The company’s rise also included a serious legal crisis involving its founder.
Federal regulators accused Steve Madden of participating in stock manipulation connected with Stratton Oakmont and related brokerage activity during the 1990s. In 2001, Madden pleaded guilty to securities fraud and money laundering charges and stepped away from executive leadership of the public company. He was later sentenced to federal prison.
The company continued operating while Madden was incarcerated. After his release, he returned to a creative role rather than his former position as chief executive. The episode became one of the most dramatic turns in the company’s history and later helped inspire renewed public interest in Madden’s story through books, documentaries, and the broader cultural fascination with Stratton Oakmont.
Steve Madden Is Still a Queens Company
Despite becoming an international fashion business, Steven Madden, Ltd. never abandoned its New York base.
The company’s principal offices remain in Long Island City. Its 2025 annual report lists 52-16 Barnett Avenue as its headquarters, only a few miles from Midtown Manhattan.
That continuing Queens presence makes Steve Madden different from many fashion labels that simply use New York imagery as part of their marketing. The company was incorporated in New York, developed from a Queens operation, and still runs its corporate headquarters from Queens more than three decades later.
Where Is Madden NYC Sold Today?
Walmart is currently one of the most visible places to find Madden NYC. Its online Madden NYC department includes men’s, women’s, and girls’ footwear along with clothing, bags, and accessories.
Retail distribution can change, so shoppers should not assume that Madden NYC will always be limited to one chain. Steve Madden’s own corporate strategy is based on wholesale distribution across department stores, mass merchants, off-price retailers, online retailers, specialty chains, and other channels.
What matters more than the retailer is the branding on the product: Madden NYC is a Steve Madden-owned trademark even though it is separate from the flagship Steve Madden label.
Is Madden NYC Fake Steve Madden?
No. Madden NYC is not fake Steve Madden.
It is an official brand owned by Steven Madden, Ltd. The confusion comes from the fact that the company deliberately uses different Madden labels for different markets. A Madden NYC shoe is not the same product as a Steve Madden shoe merely because both carry the family name, but both brands belong to the same corporate parent.
This is similar to the way many fashion companies operate multiple labels aimed at different customers and retail channels. The branding allows Steve Madden to sell trend-driven products across a much wider range of price points without putting every item under the identical flagship label.
What Should Shoppers Know Before Buying Madden NYC?
- Madden NYC is an authentic Steve Madden-owned brand. It is not an unrelated company or counterfeit label.
- It is not identical to the flagship Steve Madden line. The brands target different retail channels and can use different products, materials, and construction.
- Check the individual product description. Material composition varies by style, so the label alone cannot tell you whether a shoe uses leather, polyurethane, textile, or another material.
- Do not rely on permanent price ranges. Retail pricing, markdowns, and assortments change constantly.
- Buy from established retailers. That is the best way to avoid confusing legitimate Madden NYC merchandise with unauthorized marketplace listings.
