Anyone who regularly drives the New York State Thruway, whether commuting, taking a family road trip, heading to college, or crossing the state on I-87 and I-90, knows that choosing the right service area can make a long drive much easier. The old Thruway plazas that generations of New Yorkers remember have now been transformed by a $450 million redevelopment program, and the food, fuel, charging, and convenience-store options have changed along with the buildings. They have been working on these rest stops for the past couple of years, and it’s been frustrating at times when some have been closed, but they have finally completed the restoration.
The New York State Thruway Authority’s redevelopment project covered all 27 official service areas. Twenty-three restaurant buildings were rebuilt and four were significantly renovated, with the final service area reopening in November 2025. The project was financed through a public-private partnership with Empire State Thruway Partners, with no toll or tax dollars used for construction. All 27 service areas are now open, although individual restaurant hours vary throughout the day.
This guide follows the service areas in milepost order—northbound on I-87 from the lower Hudson Valley and then westbound along I-90 from the Capital Region to the Pennsylvania state line. Dining information below reflects the New York State Thruway Authority service-area directory updated September 8, 2026. Applegreen convenience stores carry Taste NY products at every service area, and all Chick-fil-A locations are closed on Sundays.

Three Useful Tips for the New Thruway Service Areas
- Remember the Sunday Chick-fil-A closures. Every Chick-fil-A operating at a New York State Thruway service area is closed on Sundays. If you are planning a Sunday road trip, check which other restaurants are available at your intended stop.
- Restaurant hours are not the same as service-area hours. The service areas and Applegreen convenience stores are open around the clock, but individual restaurants operate on their own schedules. Early-morning and late-night choices can therefore be much more limited.
- Check charging status before relying on a specific stop. High-speed EV charging is available at many Thruway service areas, but charger counts and operating status can change. The Thruway Authority maintains current charging information on its service-area pages.
The redevelopment has changed the Thruway road-trip experience considerably. The old brick plazas that many New Yorkers grew up with have largely been replaced by brighter, more modern buildings and a very different food lineup. The most important thing for drivers is that the 27 service areas are not interchangeable. Some have only one major restaurant, while Sloatsburg, Angola, Pembroke, Plattekill, and other larger stops provide several choices. Knowing what is ahead can save time—and prevent an unnecessary stop at a plaza that does not have what you are looking for.
